Weld was a prime mover in the Abolitionist movement and his seminal work, 'Slavery As It Is – Testimony of 1000 Witnesses' was the inspiration for 'Uncle Tom's Cabin'. Weld uses many quotes and examples from the Bible in 'The Bible Against Slavery' and also the Ten Commandments – particularly Thou Shalt Not Steal and Thos Shalt Not Covet.
