Chapter 1

Estrella Rios smoothed a hand back over her hair, hoping her unruly curls stayed in place. At least for the next three hours. As a favor to her former college roommate, who was also her best friend, she was filling in for one of the hired servers at Sabrina’s first professional art show. It was at a well-known studio and drew serious buyers. Estrella understood her friend’s neurotic need to control every little detail tonight.

Since Estrella had waited tables during college, carrying a tray around all night was a piece of cake. Or it would be if a certain tall, extremely sexy man would stop staring at her—and following her around. It was unsettling. Well, she couldn’t prove he was following her, but everywhere she turned, there he was.

Watching her with pale green eyes that were damn unnerving, he moved with a liquid, almost supernatural grace.

Almost as if the man knew she was thinking about him, he appeared in her line of sight again. Even with the throng of people between them she could feel the heat of his gaze, as if he was actually touching her. He stared at her with laser-like focus. Then he blinked and she sucked in a deep breath. Oh crap. He was like her. She could see the animal lurking in his gaze. It had only been a brief flash but she’d recognized the animal peering back at her.

He was a shifter—a human who could turn into an animal. The few male shifters she’d met in college were jerks who thought they could dominate and tell her what to do just because she was packless. That was another term she’d learned while in college. Apparently packless translated to unprotected in the shifter world. Whatever. She wasn’t concerned with learning anything about packs or other shifters. She’d grown up in the human world. Luckily, all of her friends were human and she’d blended into their world almost perfectly from the time she was five years old and abandoned to the foster system. She knew how to blend in and hide from those who thought their strength gave them a free pass to treat her however they wanted.

Swallowing hard at the thought that the hot stranger could be just like some of the other shifters she’d known, she took a step back and collided with a wall of muscle. The tray in her hand dipped, the champagne glasses sloshing and threatening to fall, but two strong hands encircled her from behind. One steadied the tray and the other clutched possessively around her hip.

She knew it was him before she even turned around. He had an earthy scent that reminded her of the forest after a fresh spring rain. No matter how good he smelled, she did not appreciate the way he was holding on to her. As if he knew her and had the right to touch her.

Firmly clasping the tray, she stepped away from him and was careful to keep the drinks balanced as she turned. When her eyes clashed with his pale ones, a shot of pure warmth and adrenaline punched through her. The man was certainly attractive in an edgy, dangerous sort of way. With dark hair just a little too long and sharply defined cheekbones, he looked as if he’d been cut from stone. He’d triggered her fight-or-flight response, but not necessarily in a bad way. Her inner jaguar told her to run fast and far from this man who was clearly a predator. She could see it in his gaze. No one in their right mind would mess with this guy.

Even though her jaguar was spooked, her purely female human side was very interested. Estrella was glad her dress wrapped around her like a second skin.

“Your name,” he said, his voice raspy and sexy as it twined around her.

She blinked as his words jerked her out of her stupor. “Excuse me?”

“What. Is. Your. Name.” All right, he was definitely ordering her to tell him.

And she did not like his demanding tone. “Think you can ask like a normal person?”

He blinked and she realized she’d taken him off guard. Clearing his throat, he took a step closer, and she was very thankful to have the flutes of champagne as a barrier. “You’re in my Alpha’s territory but you haven’t announced your presence or asked for permission to be here. I want your name.”

Uh-oh. So there was no doubt he knew she was a shifter too. Maybe she’d broken some unwritten rule. Estrella ignored the sliver of fear that trailed down her spine. “I don’t know what an Alpha is and I don’t really care.” Though she could guess what it was. “I don’t have to ask anyone for permission to be anywhere. And if you even think about touching me again, you’ll lose your hand.”

He blinked again and this time she knew she’d surprised him. Something told her that didn’t happen very often. Before he could respond, she swiveled and moved to mingle with other art patrons. She used her supernatural grace to weave through the crowd of well-dressed people as she offered them drinks.

When she finally turned back toward the trio of black-and-white oil paintings of the Everglades, Estrella felt a mix of relief and disappointment that the mystery man was no longer hovering there. For a moment her gaze lingered on the paintings, each one depicting the moon in various phases. In the third one, Sabrina had added a stark orange moon—the only splash of color in the darker scenes. Forcing her gaze away, Estrella quickly scanned the rest of the first floor before doing an actual physical walk through.

He was gone. And she had a job to do.

Ignoring the disturbing disappointment that welled up inside her at his absence, she pasted on a smile and returned to the kitchen to refill her tray. The way customers were drinking, she hoped it would make them loosen up and help her friend’s sales.

Three-and-a-half hours later Estrella’s feet ached—thanks to her four-inch heels—but at least the crowd was gone and the studio was closed. The servers from the catering company were loading up their van, but that didn’t fall into her realm of duties. She’d just done them a favor by picking up some of the slack and now she was sitting on one of the cleared off food tables and munching on petit fours. After demolishing five, she was thinking about eating a sixth when Sabrina strode out of the manager’s office, a giant grin on her face.

Her friend had flatironed her hair for the event and had pulled it back into a tight ponytail, showing off her sharp cheekbones and gorgeous café au lait skin. Sabrina’s dark eyes narrowed slightly. “How many of those things have you eaten?”

Estrella shrugged and returned her friend’s grin.

“I don’t know how you eat all that processed crap or where you put it all.” Sabrina mock-shuddered and grabbed a strawberry off her plate.

Estrella just shook her head. “You don’t know what you’re missing.” She popped another of the mini cakes into her mouth, savoring the sweetness. Thanks to being a shifter her metabolism was high, which meant she had to eat a lot more than most people. Of course her friend didn’t know she was a shifter. It was the only secret Estrella had ever kept from her. “So, how was the show?”

“A lot better than expected. I’ll be able to cover rent for at least the next six months if I budget right, which means I can officially quit my waitressing job.” Sabrina picked up her purse off the table so Estrella stood and snagged her own clutch, leaving her plate behind.

Estrella had just done the same after selling a few of her sculptures. Of course money was definitely tight, but she’d decided to take the plunge and throw herself into her work full-time. At least until her money ran out or she sold more pieces. Hopefully the latter would happen instead. “Do you realize this means we’re both full-time artists? Both doing exactly what everyone said we were crazy to even think about trying?”

Sabrina’s megawatt smile was blinding. “I’m scared to quit my job, but...I’m more scared not to.”

“I totally understand.” Estrella and Sabrina had met as freshmen in college and had been inseparable ever since. No one else she knew understood what it was like trying to make it as an artist more than her best friend.

“I’m tempted to go out and celebrate but I’m so tired.” Sabrina stopped in front of their vehicles as she fished her keys out of her purse.

Estrella did the same and stifled a yawn. “Go home and get some sleep because tomorrow you’re giving your notice at work.”

“You just don’t want to go out—but you’re right, I do need sleep. Thanks again for tonight.” Sabrina gave her a quick hug and a kiss on the cheek before pressing her key fob.

Following suit, Estrella got into her Jeep and steered out of the nearly deserted parking lot. Instead of heading east like Sabrina she turned west in the direction of the new place she’d recently rented on the outskirts of Huntsville, Alabama. The cottage-style house in the middle of the woods had been perfectly priced and allowed her to shift and run free in privacy. Plus it had a small air-conditioned studio attached to the house where she was able to work. It was like the place had been custom-made for her.

As she turned off onto the two-lane road that led to her place, she was surprised when headlights appeared in her rearview mirror. The road was a dead end and there was only one more—unoccupied—house about two miles down from hers. Slowing her vehicle, she started to pull off onto the side of the road when she spotted another set of headlights behind the first vehicle. What the heck was going on?

She stopped so that whoever was behind her could pass. When the vehicle behind her also pulled off, panic jumped inside her.

The headlights directly behind her shut off and she realized it was a truck. It was too dark to see who was inside other than to make out a big, broad-shouldered silhouette. Definitely male. Estrella quickly debated her options. She could try to turn around and outrun the man in her Jeep but he could easily block her with his vehicle. No, she’d be better off if she jumped out, shifted and made a run for it. If this was a group of shifters who wanted her for nefarious purposes she’d have a much better chance in her animal form. As a jaguar she was powerful and could run at incredible bursts of speed. Considering the way that shifter had been eyeing her at the party tonight, she couldn’t discount anything.

The moment her fingers touched the door handle, a tearing sound made her jerk around. Claws sliced through the plastic window of her Jeep. There was no way the silhouette she’d seen in the truck behind her could have moved so fast.

Before she could move, the figure was jerked away by someone else. Whoever it was moved in a quiet, fast blur. Scrambling, she leaped from her vehicle. Someone let out a strangled cry but the sound was cut off abruptly. Hurrying away from her Jeep, she froze as she rounded it and saw a giant black wolf use his freaking claws to rip the head off a man. The wolf snarled angrily, its white teeth dripping blood as it tossed the head to the side.

Estrella’s mouth almost fell open as the decapitated man shriveled to ash right in front of her. What the hell?

She stumbled back into a wall of muscle. Turning, she nearly shrieked as a man with fangs and claws protruding from his hands grasped her by the shoulders. At least he wasn’t slicing her up with his claws.

“Don’t worry about the wolf, you’re coming with me, bonita,” he purred. His amber eyes were definitely not human.

Ohmygodohmygodohmygod! This guy was a vampire. Her brain rejected it, not wanting to believe the creatures were even real. But this guy was so a vampire. And he thought he could take her?

Instinctively, she shoved at his chest before undergoing the change into animal. She’d seen a wolf change once and his shift had been brutal and had taken precious moments. Hers was seamless as her jaguar form took over. Her clothes shredded as her bones quickly realigned and her much stronger and bigger animal side took over.

She lunged at the vampire, going for the throat as she knocked him to the ground. That wolf shifter might not be an ally but she’d seen the way he’d taken down that man—vampire. She’d been forced to kill a wolf shifter in the past and it looked like these other creatures had the same weakness. Decapitation probably killed everything.

The vampire with an olive complexion similar to her own held up his arms defensively as he cried out. “I don’t want to hurt you!”

If she’d been in her human form, she’d have snorted. Yeah right. She bit into his forearm, surprised by the taste of his blood. It was sweeter, not as coppery as animal and human blood.

The dark-haired vampire slashed at her, raking those claws down her left side as he tried to dislodge her. Behind her she heard more snarling. Afraid of a sneak attack, she let go and risked a quick glance over her shoulder. The black wolf was sparring with two more vampires.

She didn’t know why he was putting himself in danger for her, but if he could take on two, she could take on this one. The vampire struggling underneath her hold was keeping his throat and face protected so she went for one of his biceps, keeping him pinned to the ground with her weight and strength.

He cried out in pain as she tore through tendons and muscles. A hard fist slammed into her head, loosening her jaw. Letting go, she rolled over onto her paws and jumped back, putting a few feet of distance between them.

“We don’t want to hurt you!” he shouted, palms raised.

She snarled and started for him again. He sprinted away from her. The vampire shouted something and she saw a blur of movement as one of the others who’d been sparring with the black wolf ran back to the SUV parked behind the truck. They dove into it and seconds later tires squealed as they tore back the way they’d come.

Still panting, she took a cautious step toward the limp wolf on the ground. Even though it was dark, thanks to the stars, moon and her extrasensory abilities, she could see a pool of crimson spreading onto the road underneath the other shifter.

Though she didn’t know the wolf, he’d still been fighting the vampires. For her? Maybe. She didn’t know what to make of this guy.

She knew she should probably be more focused on the fact that vampires were real and she’d just been attacked by one, but she had to help the wolf. As she neared the animal it let out a soft moan. Nudging his jaw with her nose, she froze when its eyes blinked open. They were the exact pale shade of green as the man from the art studio.

Chapter 2

Rainer stared into the eyes of the beautiful female jaguar shifter. She was a sleek orange feline with dark black spots. Jagged pain lanced down his left side. One of the vamps had sliced into him, breaking a rib and piercing him with a silver dagger. The rib was already healing and the silver hadn’t gotten into his blood stream so while he hurt, he was almost four hundred and fifty years old and more than capable of compartmentalizing his pain.

For a brief moment he tensed, wondering if the female planned to attack him too. The thought of sparring with this woman, even in self-defense, made something painful well up inside him. Some primal part of him just couldn’t do it. But then she let out a soft whine and nudged him with her nose and he realized she was worried. Or at least concerned about him.

He tried to move then realized he must have been injured worse than he originally thought. More pain ripped through his right shoulder like tiny daggers digging into him. Damn vampire had sliced through him with his claws. Rainer let his head fall back against the pavement. He’d heal soon enough and if those vamps didn’t come back and the woman didn’t try to attack him, he’d be fine.

But she clearly had other ideas. After whining and nudging him again, she turned tail and disappeared around her Jeep. Less than a minute later she came back around in her human form wearing a form-fitting T-shirt and shorts. All shifters he knew carried around multiple changes of clothes so it made sense she had something extra to put on. It was a shame she’d had to destroy that skimpy black dress though. He’d had some wicked fantasies earlier tonight of slowly peeling it off her. Watching her carefully, he relaxed slightly when she opened the back door of her Jeep.

“Come on, big fella. You’re coming home with me so you can heal. Do not make me regret this,” she murmured as she bent down and picked him up.

Rainer was huge and if she’d been human she wouldn’t have been able to lift him. As it was, the petite woman strained and grunted as she slid her arms under his big wolf body and lifted him up. Though it would have hurt like hell, he could have jumped into the back on his own, but he was afraid any sudden movements would scare her.

And he wasn’t above playing the sympathy card if it got her to take him back to her place. She was living in Huntsville, which was his Alpha’s territory and she hadn’t made her presence known to anyone that he knew of. Considering that his oldest brother Alaric was second-in-command to Knox, his Alpha, Rainer would have known if a jaguar shifter had been living in their territory. Then she’d acted as if she didn’t know what an Alpha was. Whatever was going on with this woman and whoever she was, he was damn sure going to find out.

Because those vampires tonight had been hunting her.

After gently sliding him onto a thick quilt, she shut the back door while she muttered to herself about how she was definitely going to regret letting a wolf into her home. If he’d been in human form he would have smiled. Inhaling deeply, he scented her on the quilt and the smell soothed him on a primal level. Most shifters carried quilts or blankets around in their vehicles in case they decided to stop somewhere and sleep out in the woods, on the beach, or wherever.

He didn’t like leaving his truck but there was no identifying information inside and the license plate wasn’t linked to his pack. If someone stole it, well, he’d take care of that later. The gentle hum of her engine would have lulled him to sleep but after only a minute of driving the vehicle shut off again and she got out.

Making a split second decision, he shifted back to his human form. His bones cracked, broke and realigned and skin quickly replaced fur. Rainer wanted to be able to talk to her and he wanted to know why they’d stopped when they were in the middle of nowhere. She definitely hadn’t gone far.

Seconds later the back door opened. The woman’s dark eyes widened and she took a step back. She seemed almost frozen to the spot as her gaze raked over him. He was turned on his side, still covered in blood and aching, but the way she stared at him made another part of his body react. When her eyes landed on his groin area, her olive-hued cheeks tinged bright pink and she quickly averted her gaze.

Looking at a spot over his shoulder, she cleared her throat. “Do you need help getting out?”

No. “Yes.” Yeah, he definitely wasn’t above playing the sympathy card if it got her to touch him. Rainer sat up and winced when he saw the blood he’d left behind. “Sorry about your quilt,” he muttered.

“It’s fine. We need to get you cleaned off.” Still keeping her gaze not quite on his face, she slid an arm under his shoulder and helped him slide out. Her body was stiff and tense as she held on to him, making it clear she didn’t like touching him.

He inhaled deeply, memorizing her jasmine scent. It was so pure and classic he wanted to bury his face against her neck and just breathe her in. “My name’s Rainer,” he said as his feet touched the paved driveway that led to a cottage style one-story home in the middle of the woods. Perfect for privacy, but not for a single female shifter who clearly had no pack for protection. He frowned at the thought of her out here all alone. His inner wolf flexed its claws, wanting to protect her.

She paused for a moment. “I’m Estrella. Now come on. I want to get you inside before those...things come back.”

He let her name roll around in his head as he savored it. But the uncertain way she said “things” made him curious. “You’ve never seen a vampire before?”

Her grip around him tightened as she hissed in a breath. “Those men really were vampires? I’d thought so but I still wasn’t sure if I was right or if they were even real...” She trailed off and put a key in the front door.

The second they stepped inside she let her arm drop, leaving him standing naked and dripping blood in her foyer. He started to call out but she returned a moment later carrying a towel covered in old paint splatters. Keeping her dark brown eyes on his she held the towel out, effectively blocking his lower body from her line of vision. “This is so you can cover yourself.” Her cheeks had turned that delicious shade of pink again.

Despite the residual pain pulsing through him, Rainer wondered what it would be like to nip and kiss her very full lips. “Does my nudity bother you?” Most shifters were immune to nudity, but he still wrapped the towel around his waist.

“Uh, yeah.” She said it as if he was stupid. Her gaze trailed to his shoulder and to his surprise she took a step closer and ran a gentle finger over his almost healed wounds. “You’re almost healed so if you want to take a shower and clean off the blood I think I can find a clean set of clothes that fit. Then I’ll take you back to your truck.”

And get him the hell out of her house, was her unspoken message. That wasn’t happening anytime soon. Not until he got his answers and not until he was certain she wasn’t under threat from those vamps. Eyeing her, he let his gaze trail down her lithe, lean body for the second time that night. Even though she wasn’t wearing that tight dress, her top and shorts showed enough that he could fantasize about running his hands and mouth over all her smooth, olive skin. Her body practically glowed.

She’d had her hair pulled back at the art studio but after her shift to animal then back to human it was free and her tight corkscrew curls framed her face, giving her an almost innocent quality. He couldn’t be sure but he guessed she had some Mediterranean and possibly Hispanic heritage. Wherever she was from, the woman was gorgeous. For the first time in over four hundred years he felt absolutely tongue-tied as he stared at her. As he brought his gaze back up though, something else struck him. “That vampire clawed you, too.”

She shrugged. “Yeah, so?”

“How did you heal before you even put on your clothes?”

“The same way you’re healing now,” she snapped, annoyance and some other foreign note in her voice that he couldn’t define.. Fear, maybe?

That’s when he realized how tired she was. Dark circles ringed under her eyes and she’d just admitted she’d never seen vamps before so he knew she had to be reeling somewhat from the shock of that revelation. “Ah, sorry. Thank you for bringing me back here. I know it wasn’t easy to bring a strange shifter into your home, especially a male of a different species. I’d appreciate a shower but then I’d like to talk to you about some things, namely those vampires.”
