'A Bitter Heritage' is a romance-adventure novel written by John Bloundelle-Burton. The story begins as a young man, Julian Ritherdon, travels by train to see the governor and is frustrated by the delays caused by a race-meeting. He becomes anxious as he reads a mysterious letter from the governor that hints at bad news and the possibility of his own death.
