Free Joe and Other Georgian Sketches

This is a collection of short stories set in the American state of Georgia, in the mid-19th century. The first story, Free Joe, is about a black man who was a slave but who is now free. He is described as drifting around the town of Hillsborough and was evidently far from popular among the local white population.
