American physician J.D. Harris traveled to the Caribbean in 1860. He traveled there searching for sites fit for settlement by African Americans who wanted to leave the country. Later that year, Harris published A Summer on the Borders of the Caribbean Sea, which described his expedition to Haiti and nearby islands. In this work, he supported the establishment of a settlement for free blacks with the help and security of the American government.
