This is a mystery novel that revolves around Clifford Cheriton and his former secretary Evelyn Marchand. Canton is the young man who will inherit her uncle's estate, but he somewhat runs around with the wrong crowd. Clifford Cheriton is romantically interested in Evelyn and plans to go to Sandchester, where he can observe Canton who might be his rival.
