Led Astray and The Sphinx

"Led Astray" and «The Sphinx» are a pair of novellas by the author Octave Feuillet. In Led Astray a man called George writes to his friend Paul whilst on holiday in Normandy. He gives the humorous tale of his adventures while staying first at a miller's house and then at the house of a Marquis. The Sphinx tells the story of Raoul de Trecœur's family. Raoul is destined to be a great success in spite of his hedonistic ways. When he marries his wife Clothilde, they have a daughter named Julie. The father and daughter adore on another and Raoul spoils her endlessly. But tragedy soon strikes when Raoul falls ill and dies. Urged by society to remarry, the widow Clothilde, still young, nevertheless fears what her daughter Julie will think of it since she still idolizes her father…
