'The Story of the Innumerable Company, and Other Sketches' is the work of David Starr Jordan, a famous ichthyologist and the founding President of Stanford University. It features a collection of sketches (short stories without a plot). They describe different exotic locales such as the Hospice of the Great Saint Bernard in the Alps and the 'Passion' play of the Oberammergau. They give an often unique history of each of these destinations in a vivid manner.
