Chapter 8 Saint George And The Dragon
While walking and telling her story, Katherine spotted a difference in Daniel’s style. This time he was wearing not a three piece suit, but a white shirt, a dark sweater over it and a jacket of the same shade.
I had to admit, Daniel has quite a taste in clothing.
– So, upon coming home you noticed that it’s contents were thrown all over the place and the flat was in a complete mess? These two bastards might have ransacked your home before looking after you all around Oxford, in search of your father’s discovery.
– I think so too. But why did they assume that I might own whatever my father has found lately? I hate to admit it, but we haven’t seen each other for ages. I’ve even chosen my mother’s family name “Mayfair’ over his.
– How so? – a sound of surprise in Daniel’s voice. – Pardon my curiosity, Katherine.
– No worries.
– Judging by everything that has happened to you recenly, even a tiny detail might shed some light on what’s going on here.
– We’ve had a terrible fight about me chosing literature as my major, over history. Moreover, I didn’t want the university officials and professors know that I belong to the Winters family. Everyone could have started making false assumptions and spread rumours on my account. I just wanted to achieve everything myself.
– I do know how you feel, Katherine. Frankly, my father and I had the same argument once. Nevertheless, I kept the family name, but went up the career ladder myself. Recognition and self-fulfillment is everything when it comes to a career.
– I wouldn’t agree more.-Katherine replied giving Daniel an approving smile.
I’ve never felt as calm and serene with any other guy. There’s something about Daniel that makes me trust him. Not that I’m in love. No. It’s too early for that, but we obviously share a spark or something.
– So, from what I’ve just learnt from you, they couldn’t possibly know that you might have a clue on where to start the search for the Tudor treasure.
– Absolutely not. I have no inkling of what that treasure might even be. Of course, as a child, I heard stories of the casket full of Spanish gems, that Robert Dudley delivered to Queen Elizabeth I upon negotiations with the Spanish to make peace. Seems like these stones meant a lot to Elizabeth, due to her love for Earl Leiscter. No one has ever heard of them since. Do you think my dad somehow came upon these gems?
– You’re properly schooled, Miss Mayfair. It might be true. In that case your father’s life along with yours, are at a threat, cause, from my experience, smugglers who make money out of selling historical pieces and ancient jewlllery through black market, stop at nothing, take it from me.
– How do you know so much about them?
– We all have our resources, you know.
What does he mean by saying that? Something’s off here.
Having entered the History Faculty they went straight to Daniel’s office.
When getting inside, Katherine was struck by the way everything here is arranged. Tall bookcases full of vivid folios, mostly about literature, art and history.
– May I? -Katherine asked, spotting a shelf dedicated to Shakespeare.
– Sure. Enjoy yourself.-Daniel replied collecting his students’ home assignments from one of his desk drawers.
Katherine made out a huge folio which contained the Bard’s tragedies. Flipping through the pages carefully, she couldn’t help but admiring the images accompanying each text piece.
– Impressive! Having dedicated most of my time to Shakespeare and his works, I must admit I haven’t run into something similar before. The typography, the images, the layout. Every inch of this piece is amazing!
– I’m glad you’re enjoying it. It’s a deluxe 19th century edition I happened to find in one of Paris’ antiques.
– Lucky you. I’ve never seen anything more beautiful.
Seeing her so happy, passionate and full of joy, expressing genuine, emotions concerning this folio, made Daniel smile once more. He hasn’t experienced anything similar for a long time. Too many gloomy pages of his life that he had to turn not so long ago. But with this angel-like young woman, he could be himself and finally let it go. A glim of hope that he could fall for someone else since his divorce, filled his heart with warmth.
By no means, this woman is alluring. No one has ever made me feel this way since Margot.
When putting the book back to the shelf, Katherine was amused to see one of Rafael’s famous paintings.
– An admirer of Rafael’s work, are you? – Katherine inquired. “ Saint George and The Dragon”. [6]
– Oh, yes. One of my favourite pieces of his, actually. Symbolises the victory of light over darknesss. What’s more, it was HenryVII, who commissioned Rafael to create this work. A must have for a Tudor researcher, I suppose.
– Agreed. My mum actually knows all about art. She has been telling me a lot about it since I was little. We have been sharing this passion long since.
– A good thing to explore, actually. To my mind, art is all about the ability to reflect on life, death, human nature, history, mythology, religion. The list is endless.
– And cultivate compassion, the ability to feel and understand everything around you.-Katherine added.
They shared a smile. It felt like they’ve known each other their entire lives.
– I have a weak spot for Caravaggio. Although some of his paintings might send a chill down one’s spine, at the same time it strucks you with how real the themes and people depicted are.
– Definitely. Caravaggo used to say that: “All works, no matter what or by whom painted, are nothing but bagatelles and childish trifles… unless they are made and painted from life, and there can be nothing… better than to follow nature.” [7]
– Exactly that! I didn’t expect us to have so much in common. -Katherine gasped.
– Neither did I. What’s your favourite painting? – Daniel enquired.
To my mind, this painting represents his famous quote the best. – . “The Incredulity of Saint Thomas” [8]
– Mine too. It shows the duality of human nature. The doubts and lack of faith that people experience.
They could have carried on holding this conversation but a memory of Katherine’s father’s disturbing message brought her down to earth.
– It hurts me to end this incredible conversation, but what should we do about this ‘treasure’ thing?
– First of all, seems like your mother was the last person to talk to your father. We should probably contact her to learn more. May be Prof. Winters has been blackmailed or followed, lately.
– Sounds reasonable, but I’m afraid it’s hardly possible, since these two gorrilas might be still watching me. I don’t want to put my mum’s life in danger.
– Right you are. Do you have a place to stay till everything’s over?
– I stayed at my best friend’s place last night, but after what happened I suppose it’s too dangerous to get her involved.
– You’re being reasonable, Katherine. I don’t want any harm coming to you, either. How about staying at my place for a few days, until everything’s sorted out?
Bewildered by such an offer, Katherine went mute at loss of anything else to say.
You’ve only known him for less than a day, and now you’re going to stay at his place? It’s sheer madness!
– I understand, it might be a bit shocking, taking into account our short acquintance, but I want you to know, I have nothing else in mind but your safety.
– If you insist. But you’re right. I’m a little confused. On the other hand, I have little choice but I don’t want to be a burden.
– You’re not. Please, let me help you out?
– Okay.-Katherine accepted, still not sure she’s doing the right thing.

Chapter 9 A Smoke Detector
When ready to leave the office to get going to Daniel’s place, Katherine noted Daniel wearing a disturbing look.
What’s on his mind? He seems uneasy.
– Is something wrong? -Katherine inquired inclining to somehow make his heavy thoughts lift.
– No, no. Everything’s fine. We should get going. Wait for me at the lobby, would you?
– Agreed. Are you sure you don’t need help?
What’s going on?
– No, thanks. Please, leave all the worries behind. I’m fine, I assure you.
– If you say so.
Katherine had no other option but to leave the office not to make Daniel feel even more uncomfortable.
Why’s he behaving that way? Everything went so well in the course of our chat and then he experienced a sudden mood shift. Was it because of some secrets of his own that he’s not yet ready to share with me? I should probably give him some space. We’re not even friends yet.
Katherine went straight to the reception. A woman in her thirties standing over the reception desk smiled broadly:
– Is there anything I can help with, Miss?
– May be you can. How long has Professor Lawrence worked here?
– For about eight years now. You know, he’s an esteemed scholar among historians and the university faculty. His students praise him not just for his professional skills but his easy-going personality and integrity. Oh, and of course he’s a man of his word. Everytime someone in his social circle gets into trouble, he’s always there for them.
– You seem to know a lot on Mr.Lawrence’s account.
– That’s part of my job, Miss.
Suddenly, Katherine heard the door opening and Daniel stepping out of his office shutting the door and locking it.
– Ms. Fletcher, has anyone asked me while I was away? – he inquired approaching the reception.
– No, Mr.Lawrence. -the receptionist replied twisting a lock of hair on her finger.
No doubting this woman is in love with the guy…
– Has anyone entered the office in my absence? -Daniel aked another question politely, but one could easily notice a note of distress in his voice.
– No, oh, yes! How could I forget. There were two chaps from the fire inspection asking to show them around your office to check if the smoke detector is serviceable.
– Fire inspection? Two chaps? – Daniel’s voice still polite but at it’s edge.
He seems frustrated. What’s going on here anyway?
– That’s what I just said.-the receptionist noted a bit puzzled.
– Please, Ms. Fletcher, next time anyone asks permisson to enter my office, let me know first and let no one inside, would you?
God, a little more and he’s going to lose his temper. What could possibly provoke such a change?
– As you wish, Prof. Lawrence.-Ms. Fletcher replied, this entire situation making her blue.
– Settled then. Have a nice day.-Daniel grinned taking Katherine by hand leading her outdoors.
– What is this all about? You look as if you were kicked in a head.
– They were here. – Daniel answered, worry readable in his voice.
– Who? The Americans?
– Yes.
– How do you know it was them?
– As soon as we entered the office, I saw some of the books were out of their common place and the chair..
– What?
– Looks like it has been moved…
– You think they’re spying on us?
– I’m sure of it and they pretended to be fire inspectors to install this.-he took a small black bug in a tiny plastic bag out of his jacket pocket.
– A bug? Wait a minute. My mind simply cannot process all this nonesence. How do they even no about you?
– Seems like these two have some high-level contacts after all.
– Who on earth are they and what do they want with me?
– I hate to admit it, but I don’t know yet. I’m sure the police will have all the answers after this thing is fingerprinted. For now, your safety is my top priority. After all, I made a promise to your father to keep you safe.
– A promise? May I ask how you got to know him in the first place? And how do you detect such a thing. -Katherine wondered pointing at the bug which Daniel was still holding in his palm.
– I know you’re in distress about all this. Would you mind if we postpone the questioning part till we get to safety? -Daniel pleaded holding Katherine’s hand softly.
Oh God, his voice, his touch and charm are almost irresistable!
– Forgive me my impatience. Anything you say. I’ve never been in such a situation before and I’m afraid. Honestly, I don’t know what to do… – tears issuing down Katherine’s cheek. She did her best to supress them but clearly failed. It was too much to hold.
– Do not apologise, and fear nothing. As long as I’m near, no harm will come to you. It’s a promise. – Daniel comforted her wiping away the tears. His fingers warm and soft against her wet cheek.
What’s happening to me? I’ve never gone emotional in front of people. I hardly know This mystery is taking the wind out of sails.
Chapter 10 At Daniel’s Place
Upon collecting all the necessary personal belonings from Katherine’s place they moved forward to Daniel’s house.
– I’ve made some important calls, the police is on their way to the flat. Soon we’ll be aware of who might have caused all this damage and what were they after in the first place.
– Sorry for causing so much commotion. It feels like the ground is going to swallow me. I’ll never be able to repay you enough for all the care you’re giving me.
– Please, Katherine… – Daniel pleaded. – You’re clearly in need of help at the moment. It’s not in my custom to turn my back on a woman desperate for support.
– Such take on life is uncommon these days.
– Well, let me be an exception.
A very handsome exception, I should say…
Walking round the streets of Oxford having a light conversation with a man who looked more like a gentleman stepping out of the 19th century, rather than a 21st century chap, seemed to lift all her worries like a sea brezee cooling a fever.
– Well, here we are.-Daniel stated as they stopped near a two-storyed cozy house.
– Looks charming.-Katherine admitted.
– Thanks. My parents used to live here before moving to London. You should owe all the beauty of the house to my mum. Interior design is one of her greatest passions.
– Her taste is beyond all praise.
This remark made Daniel smile.
He seems to get on with his mum. Her mentioning makes him so happy. I wonder if he gets along with his dad.
Before entering the house Katherine observed Daniel turning off the alarm saying an unusual and special password:
“ No man is an island,
Entire of itself;
Every man is a piece of the continent,
A part of the main.” [9]
– Looks like getting in here won’t be an easy feat for those two, as clearly doesn’t ring them any bells.-the remark made Katherine chuckle. John Donne [10]
– It definetly won’t.-Daniel chuckled in response.
– No kidding. Aren’t they going to break in?
– Upon such a fiasco with your flat and the smoke detector? Either they’re complete idiots or whoever is behind all this told them to stay put.
– I hope you’re right.
– Welcome, Prof.Lawrence.
This voice comming out of nowhere made Katherine freeze.
– Sherlock, how many times do I have to tell you to stop calling me that. [11]
– Apologies, Mr.Lawrence.
– Now, that’s better.
– Who’s that? -Katherine enquired still in shock.
– Oh, my mistake. Sherlock, allow me to introduce Katherine Mayfair. She’ll be staying here tonight. Katherine, meet Sherlock, my AI butler.
Pleasure to meet you, Ms. Mayfair.
– The pleasure is all mine, Sherlock.-Katherine greeted still struck by the going on situation. – AI butler you say.
– Exactly.
– How did you come by him?
– Oh, it slipped my mind. Upon graduating from Oxford I entered MTI. AI technologies is my second major. That’s how I came up with an idea to create a virtual assistant of my own. Frankly speaking, we’ve grown to be friends.
– Unbelievable! An AI butler. I’d always thought only fictional characters inor novels could possess such a technology. At least I’ve never encountered one in my daily life. Aisaac Asimov [12] Stanislaw Lem’s [13]
– You know, everything happens for the first time.-Daniel responded admiring her knowledge of sci-fi literature.
– And it’s probably the best. Why Sherlock?
– Oh, I was infatuated with the guy as a child. I could read all night long and never get tired. Putting the book down was simply impossible. And I figured, giving an AI assistant a name is much better than a dull number. He has developed tremendously since the moment I created him.
You’re being too kind.
– See. He’s even developed modesty. How do you like that?
– Impressive.
– Where are my manners? I’ve overloaded you with all sort of things, not even giving a chance to breathe out. You’re probably overwhelmed and worn out with all the things going on. Please, make yourself at home.
– That’s very generous of you. I’m actually really desperate for a hot bath, if that’s okay.
– Be my guest. The bathroom is on the second floor. Take any time you need.
– That’s very kind of you.
– I’ll prepare a place to sleep for you.
– How about you? I don’t want to be a nuiance.
– I’ll be fine. The couch should fit perfectly.
Reaching the staircase Katherine halted for a moment.
– Daniel…
– Yes?
– I want you to know. I’m really grateful for everything you’re doing to put me at ease.
– I know. Helping you out gives me great pleasure.
Chapter 11 What Could Be Better Than A Hot Bath After A Long Day?
When entering the bathroom, locking the door behind her, Katherine looked around. There was a huge white tub opposite the door. A curtain, blocking the view for whoever might drop in. A carpet with an intricate design lying next to the tub. A sink staying on white drawer next to the window. A glass cupboard on the right.
Having a window in the bathroom is a bit weird… But I must admit it’s probably the most exquisite bathroom I’ve ever had a bath in, in my entire life! Feels like I’m , having some time off filming, enjoying her lavender bathtub. Marylin Monroe [14]
While collecting her stuff at home, Katherine managed to pick up some of grooming and bathroom products.
Speaking of lavender, I think I somehow happen to have some bubble bath with this kind of scent. I might not be Norma Jean, but I’m definitely going to fully enjoy the experience.
Turning the tap on and pouring some of the lavender bubble bath, Katherine just couldn’t stop watching the water filling the tub slowly. The sound of pouring water had this ASMR effect making Katherine pretend all the hardships of the day never happened at all.
I should probably stop standing like that, otherwise I’m causing a flood here, and destroying Daniel’s house is probably the worst way to say thank you.
Turning off the tap and trying the water with her fingers to make sure it doesn’t scorch, Katherine started slipping her black dress quickly, being in desperate need to get rid of it, having worn one for over a day.
Reaching into the tub slowly to feel the warmth of the water with every inch of her body, Katherine finally settled, fidgeting a bit, to find the right position to feel as comfy as possible.
God! It feels so good. I can actually hear this “I Feel Good” song in my head. I’d never thought a simple tub might cause such a bliss!
To finally scare off all the alarming thoughts, Katherine dived into the water, holding her breath to simply knock it all out for a moment. But paradise did not last long. A sudden buzz on her phone made Katherine surface, killing the moment selfishly.
– Hello?
– Kat, is that you?
– Maggie?
– Thank God you’ve picked up the phone! Christ, Kat! Where have you been? I was worried as hell after you left! No messages, no calls! After what you’ve told me I thought something terrible happend to you. With two phsychos out there, trying to kidnap you, not giving a call is sheer madness!
– I’m terribly sorry to have made you so worried. I didn’t mean it, honestly. You know I hate ringtons. I have probably missed all the incoming calls. With everything going around, I simply forgot all about my daily routine.
– Ok, I’ll accept that as an excuse. Tell me, or Peter and I wouldn’t make it till tomorrow. Have you made it to safety?
– Complete safety, Maggie.
– Oh, that intonation intrigues me. Is there someone else with you? The mysterious savior, isn’t it?
– Yes, you guessed it right, -Katherine replied giggling. Watson ! [15]
– I’m so glad to hear you laughing. That guy must have had an effect on you.
– He had.
– Wait, why Watson?
– I’ll explain later. Please, don’t despair. I am secured.
– Where are you?
– I’m at Daniel’s place.
– WHAT? “Curiouser and curiouser!” [16]
– Are we talking literature now?
– You’ve started it!
– Ok, back to business. WHAT? How did you end up in the guy’s flat?
– It’s a two-storyed, semi-detached house, actually.
– Gosh! Clearly, you are the best at seeking adventures.
– And you have the best sense of humour, you know that? -Katherine laughed.
– Of course I do.-Maggie affirmed having some posh notes in her voice. -You don’t come around to someone’s house barely knowing him. Tell me everything. You’re like a sister to me.
– That makes two of us. I had no other choice. These two bastards ransacked my flat. I didn’t want anyone close to me get involved after the incident.
– Jesus! That makes sense. Hope they won’t ransack his home.
– They don’t stand a chance, trust me.
– I’m starting to love the guy.
– What about Pete?
– Come on, you know what I mean!
The remark made them burst out laughing.
– Sorry, I have to go. There are still some things awaiting settling.
– Promise to call me, in case you need help. Pete and I are always there for you.
– I know, and I really appreciate it!
Hanging up, Katherine thought of how lucky she was to have all the good people around, especially Maggie.
