This is a French novel about a lonely old man who has become a hermit and a holy man and lives on the banks of the Nile. His name is Paphnutius and he feels that he has strayed far from God. He resolves to examine his sins, one by one, and in doing so remembers his lust for a beautiful courtesan. He feels he must somehow save her.
